Ban of clickers with laser (class 2/3/4) in Switzerland
21.03.2024
Dear colleagues,
Please take note of the following important information regarding lasers of class 2, 3 and 4:
What is the issue?
- Clickers with laser are devices that are used to control presentations and have a built-in laser pointer.
- According to the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health, clickers with laser of class 2, 3 or 4 are devices that are considered as dangerous and are prohibited in Switzerland; the enforcement of the regulation is now much stricter, especially at Geneva Airport.
- Anyone who possesses, imports, sells, or uses such a device in Switzerland may face legal consequences, such as fines, confiscation, or even imprisonment.
- Passengers at Geneva airport got into serious troubles because of this: https://www.20min.ch/fr/story/geneve-interroge-comme-un-malfrat-pour-son-pointeur-laser-869078609185

What should you do?
- If you have a clicker with laser of class other than 1 (1 is the only authorised laser class in Switzerland), you should immediately get rid of it in a safe and responsible way.
- Do not attempt to bring such a device to (or out of) Switzerland, even if you are only transiting through a Swiss airport or custom. You may be subject to customs inspection and face serious trouble.
- If you need a clicker for your presentations, you should use a device that has a laser of class 1 or a device that does not have a laser at all.
- You can check the class of your laser device by looking at the label on the device or the packaging. If you are not sure, you can contact the manufacturer or the supplier.
