Letter from Davorin Nakic

01.05.2026

Dear Referees, Commissioners, and National Referee Instructors,

As I approach the next chapter of my journey, I would like to share that, as of May 1st, I will step down from my role as FIBA Head of Refereeing Europe due to my retirement. At the same time, I will continue to support our work in a new capacity as an Officiating Advisor within the FIBA Referee Department Europe.

I want to take this opportunity to address you directly, with sincere appreciation and respect.

Over the past years, you have been at the very heart of everything we have built together. Your professionalism, integrity, and dedication have not only upheld the standards of our sport but have continuously elevated them. Whether on the basketball court, on the sidelines, or in the classroom, your commitment has shaped a strong and respected officiating community at both national and international levels.

I know the responsibility you carry is not always easy. It requires discipline, courage, and constant development. Yet you have embraced these challenges with passion and determination, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Together, we have worked to strengthen structures, improve quality, and create a system that supports growth and excellence. I leave this role with a deep sense of pride in what has been achieved, and even greater confidence in what you will continue to accomplish.

I would also like to express my full support and best wishes to our new FIBA Head of Refereeing Europe, Mr. Manuel Mazzoni, as he takes on this important role. I am confident that, together with all of you, Manuel will continue to lead with dedication, vision, and strong impact in the years ahead.

I encourage you to keep striving, to support one another, and to remain open to learning and innovation. The future of officiating is in your hands, and I am certain it will continue to grow stronger through your efforts.

Please also extend my heartfelt thanks to your families, whose understanding and support make your commitment possible.

As I move into my new role, I will remain a strong supporter of your work and of the values we share.

Thank you for your dedication, your passion, and your contribution to our sport.

With great respect and warmest wishes,
Davorin
