WEEKLY REPORT - 11

09.01.2023

Dear Referees.

As we expected, P-I GD 01 games were played with high intensity and many games ended with a close score line. Five of eight games finished with less than 10 points difference, with one game confirming our sentence 'each point counts'. At the end of the first quarter, with the score of 27:10 we followed a Teams quest as. they fought for each ball, each point, and at the end of the second quarter the score line was 33:40.

Data from our Video Observers:

IRS USAGE - REFEREES

We had twelve IRS usage in five games. Eleven with the correct final decision. Referees changed seven initial decisions.

Smart officiating, in modern basketball, can be linked to the correct usage of the IRS system. We have the tool; we have the Protocol. It is up to you to use IRS when it's necessary and possible. During the 'knock-out' games the most important factor is to make proper final decisions. If you need additional time to make the final decision, don't feel pressurized to finish the IRS review quickly.

IRS USAGE - HCC

During the eight games, from ten coaches we had five Coaches' requests for the HCC. Two decisions were changed. Again, good help from our coaches and again, we avoided possible tensions.

UF SITUATIONS

We had ten UF decisions in five games. The wrong final decision in five situations. It is ALARM.

First, you are Elite FIBA Referees. Second, you have a great experience. Third - you don't need to use 'game management' to make people happy. This point will be discussed after the end of P-I round.

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT

1.   Call the first illegal contact

As a result of missed calls, for first illegal contacts, we had a few action-reaction situations where WE created a problem for the game.

2.   Focus on screens in my primary

We had, and we'll continue to have, fake being fouled actions during the screening situations. If we ball watch, if we don't have an AMI, if we lack focus in our primary, we are likely to make the incorrect decision.

3.    Follow the game, be ready for the changes.

Adapt your criteria immediately when game needs.

4.   UF Criteria

UF Criteria is very clear. Accepted by the entire basketball community.

The Referees' job is very simple - follow UF criteria and use IRS when it is necessary.

What can we expect in the P-I GD 02?

Nothing that we don't already know. We can expect to have exciting games, full of emotions, and close results.

The first important point is your good scouting. We should be ready, there should be no surprises for us after the eleven game days in the present BCL Season 2022/ 2023.

During the game we can expect high pressure, with protests against our proper decisions. Players will be highly motivated and very emotional. Please, be ready for possible conflict situations. One small conflict can escalate to a big fire if we're not ready and not reading the game properly. Teams will have different tactics; in the case of bigger or big gap results from P-I 01, maybe some teams will save energy for the third game but, in that case, one elbow or trash talk could turn the game in a wrong way. Our concentration must be high from the first moment until the players shakes hands; everything can happen. To clarify some play situations, you have a great tool - IRS. In knock out games is very important to confirm or clarify our decisions, so that both teams will have trust in our job.

Nominations for the possible games, P-I GD 03, will be sent on Wednesday morning, Jan 12th. Please, inform us ASAP, if any of you are not available next week, Jan 17/18?

Dear Referees

I wish you high-level performances in your games. We need your discipline in fundamentals, readiness to adapt quickly, and smart, brave officiating.
