Dear Referees.

  • Proper contacts criteria
  • Last 2 minutes decisions - correct

TO IMPROVE

  • Active mindset - be ready to call first illegal contact
  • Focus on off the ball illegal contacts
  • Discipline in primary coverage

IRS USAGE & COACH CHALLENGE

When I started to push for the FIBA Rules change and the implementation of the Head Coach's Challenge, my ideas were:

  • In the modern day there is no reason not to use technology to have the final, proper decision
  • With the possibility to use Head Coach's Challenge, coaches will help support the Referees
  • Confidence and trust, between coaches, players, and referees will increase

After the first four rounds of BCL competition, I can confirm the benefits of the implementation of the rule, the Head Coach's challenge. Our life is now easier, coaches are helping us so that we can make the final correct decision. Changed or not, a decision is accepted. Also, coaches have the feeling and trust, that we have made the correct final decision. We have also seen during some games, players who are close to the play situations, are signaling to their coaches that they request the Coach Challenge.

UF SITUATIONS

In the area of UF, it was a typical day at the office. We were less than our 10 years average of UF per game (0,8 UF per game is the average in the last 10 years).

In the eight games GD04, we had 4 UF decisions (0,5 UF per game). Plus, one UF upgraded to DQF. In two of the five situations our Referees used IRS.

Here I would like to point out, some situations during the fast break where the defensive contact on the player with the ball was with a low degree of power. This contact didn't influence on SBRQ of the player with the ball, and the Referees made a correct no-call. At the end of the play situation many fastbreaks were finished with a dunk.

AREA FAKE BEING FOULED

In the area Fake being fouled, it was visible that the Referees are focused to cleaning the game from these FBF situations. On the other side, players also recognized that our Referees are consistent and are using the proper judgment on FBF situations.

Two typical situations from GD04:

TOUGH CALLS SECTION

The tough calls section is an educational tool for the basketball community, also for you, our BCL Referees. Please carefully analyze the play situations and statements.

Dear Referees,

Behind us we have 40 BCL Regular Season games. This means that all of you should be in high-level officiating shape. Also, you will have officiated in local competitions and in other FIBA Europe competitions. With your effort and support from Video Observers, your officiating level should go from mostly standard to an above standard and finally, our goal, to a very good level.

Soon we have our National Team window games, and QR EBM2025. I am sure that all of you will remember many from the last 100 games in August and September, the NT Windows and EuroBasket and therefore my expectations regarding your upcoming performances are very high.

I don't care about Facebook or Twitter comments. For me the facts, correct decisions and calls are what is important. What do you need to do to implement these? You need an excellent understanding of the OBR, OBRI, POE, Protocols, and IOT and by following these fundamentals our officiating is simple.

I wish you great, interesting games and high-level performances.
