WEEKLY REPORT - PLAY INS GD3

24.01.2022

Dear Referees.

Another long and decisive week of BCL games is behind us. Many people's dreams and desires have collapsed as their Teams were knocked out of the Play Ins, whilst others remain strong and continue to move forward

Our entire team who work behind you have expressed our satisfaction with how you have done your job in these intense games. Your teamwork, your motivation, and your performances were best described by a TV commentator before the start of one game last week:

Data received from your Video Observers:

IRS USAGE

During the 9 games, we had 11 IRS situations.

Initial decision - changed in 2 situations

One final decision was wrong

TO IMPROVE

My recognition from the feedback is that you need to improve ''3 in 1'':

  • In several situations, our advice is to use or to have a patience whistle.
  • Another element noted by the VOs is to reduce the number of the marginal calls.
  • The third piece of feedback is to avoid emotional calls.

I think that is clear and simple, because of our emotions, we didn't have a patience whistle, and the result were marginal calls.

MY COMMENTS

During the previous weekend, in Thessaloniki, we had a Workshop for the new FIBA Referees. We had great session led by one eminent BCL coach who spoke about modern basketball. For all of us it was a great pleasure to learn from the coach.

For me, as Referee Manager, the most significant point of the coach's presentation was his recognition of the importance of respect and mutual communication. The second point was a request for the same criteria each game day of the Competition, no matter who the Referees are.

This has also been our request to you, our top referees, as we have demanded your highest level of officiating, consistently applied criteria with open and respectful communication.

In a few days we are entering February, the fifth month of the current season. Please pay attention to your physical fitness and your body shape to prevent the possibility of injury.

To end, I again would like to share with you our satisfaction with the level of your job during the Play-ins Round. Thank you for Play-ins and let's raise the ladder for L-16.
