WEEKLY REPORT - ROUND OF 16 - 2

06.02.2023

Dear Referees.

Thank you for your approach, effort, and performances in games L16, game day 02.

In the 8 games we had:

1. Six games - the winning team was the guest team.

2. The ratio between the standard and above-standard officiating was:

Standard = 15

Above-standard = 9

3. The most standard marks are in games with +15 and more points.

It shows, possibly, a more relaxed approach after the game was over by the gap in the result.

On the other side, teams are fighting, regarding the principle of 'every point count' so please, don't relax, we never know what can be decisive at the end of the day for any team to progress to the next round, the quarter final.

4. In the toughest game by result (2 points for the guest team) - all 3 Referees were above standard.

5. Marks per role inside the Crew:

Feedback from the Referee Instructors

· POSITIVE

  • Preventive officiating
  • Game control - by decisions, communication
  • Off the ball play coverage

· TO IMPROVE

  • More discipline in my primary, avoid double whistle
  • Travel violation - inconsistent
  • Avoid marginal calls

· IRS USAGE - HCC

  • In 8 games we have 3x HCC
  • Two situations successfully changed the referee's initial decision - last touch before ball goes out-of-bounds
  • The third situation was requested to check possible UF. No change of original decision.

· IRS USAGE - REFEREES

  • Initial decision corrected 8 from 12 or 67%
  • Average length of reiview - 1 min 7 sec

· UF CRITERIA

  • We had 10 UF decisions. One decision is incorrect.

· BE READY

As you can see, from GD01 L16, we have a new section with different play situations - 'BE READY'. Here we can see fewer good decisions, mechanics, cooperation, and communication. We can all recognize what can be better and learn for the future. In some situations, we'll publish good decisions for us all to learn from.

· MY COMMENTS

It is visible that players became more nervous and sometimes frustrated. It is, and will be, very important to have a consistent, calm but assertive approach to dealing with conflicts. You should recognize where problems can develop by reading the game and having an active mindset; be ready to prevent conflicts. Of course, we cannot avoid conflict, but in many cases, we can prevent conflict from exoculating with our recognition and on-time, proper communication.

Another point is the coverage of our mistakes by disciplinary measures during the game. Of course, referees, players, and coaches make mistakes. It is more difficult to handle the behavior of the participants after a referee's mistake, but you need to be smart, especially if you also recognize that you have made mistake. It's not a reason to excuse the players and coaches' bad behavior but it is the worst scenario that everyone, through modern technology, we can see our mistake and later our use of the technical foul to defend the decision.

Until today, we have officiated close to 75% of the games for the BCL Season 2022/2023. In front of us we have a maximum of 48 games (L16, QF, and F4).

It is not a phrase, now is coming the most important part of the season. Most important for the 16 teams, for our image, and for the image of the League. We, you our FIBA Elite Officials, have a big responsibility to provide the highest possible performances in every game, quarter, minute, and second. As I wrote in the previous letter, the first 16 games, L16, were of a visibly higher quality and with the better games' quality our job becomes easier as long as our focus and concentration are at there peak.
